Friday- After A week of not looking at artists I’ve Started to look at a few more. Looking at how other artists have used colour in there abstracts paintings I have been making a few “abstract” landscapes limiting the marks I’ve made to no more than 10 and using only two colours as well as white to see what I can achieve. The above is an attempt using a two inch brush on an A4 piece of of canvas paper and is an abstraction of the view of the castle towards south beach Aberystwyth.. I simplified shapes to marks and mixed the colours simplifying each colour I could see In this effort I think I will
Look at the landscape differently and I’m itching to use larger brushes and paint bigger- not only because I feel this will have more of an impact but also I can see better if bigger!
I like to keep Colour logs of paints I’ve used in paintings as in the past I often look at some of my older paintings and have no idea how I mixed a certain colour- however since
Keeping these logs I have more of a knowledge of the easiest and quickest way to get a certain colour I want.
This above chart was from a sky painting with the colours I used in the sky. Very blue! Interestingly all these colours are made from two different types of blue (phthalocyanine and ultramarine) and a burnt sienna+ white
a smushed pallete it colours I had been using all mixed together . What I found interesting when looking at this aaa the fact that this is all impulsive and not planned but just because of the colours it could be sky or sea? Very interesting - and now this is the only
Evidence I have of this “painting” . Now I have to try and work these techniques in to my larger pieces.
Monday- in the studio trying to finish paintings I have done. The realisation that maybe none of these are paintings of clouds what else could they be. The more I painted this specific piece the less it looks like sky. Floating pebbles maybe? Either way I’ve decided this composition was t working anymore and am bored of it. My canvas size has been limiting me using big brush strokes on small canvas I decided to
Go and order a huge canvas from the school of art shop and am excited to stretch it- my first attempt. Wish me luck
The days are short- 4pm sunset. Love
