September 2019 - October 2019. MA Final Show, Aberystwyth School of Art.
This series is based on a journey through the Welsh countryside, and explores views of forests, fields, sky and the sea. The Journey begins with a distant view of the sea, travelling through the Welsh landscape by train and ending the Mawddach Estuary. During this Journey I was captivated by the ever-changing weather and the effect that the changing conditions had on the landscape. I am particularly fascinated by the effect that light weather and atmosphere have on the colour and organic shapes of the raw landscape and these themes continue to inspire my work.
This series has a much broader colour palette than my first MA show which was also based on a journey though the Welsh landscape. The first show was more interested in showing how the snow abstracted the landscape and allowed me to explore different paint application methods to allow paint to reveal the landscape through paint, similarly this series explores different paint application methods to represent a broader range of landscape, including forests, rocky mountains, bogs, sea and sky during different weather conditions to create atmosphere and a sense of place.
I have always been interested in the area in-between representation and abstraction and where they meet, I would describe these paintings as semi-abstract as both representation and abstraction play equal roles in the paintings.
