First Week Back and we were asked to bring in some recent work from over the summer to talk about.
Throughout the summer I spent a lot of my time doing drawings, and only s few finished paintings. Over the summer I spent a month working in The Pyrenees in Spain in a multi adventure camp teaching Spanish children English as well as doing adventure mountaineering activities. Whilst here I was emerged in a new way of living surrounded by a montaneous environment I was amazed and inspired to creat some Paintings.
When returning home I continued to draw the environment and people and did some painting sketches.
On my return to Aberystwyth on the weeks prior to our first tutorial I went drawing and painting back in Aberystwyth. Having not painted here for a while now is as happy to paint the views again.
To get me
Started off on the new semester I decided to paint my favourite view towards the lighthouse ( which I have painted a lot) as I always find it’s a good starting point painting something you have done before, as you know a lot from the observation you have done and it restores some of the confidence in to yourself.
I did not want to get stuck in a rut this early in the semester!
Acrylic on Canvas view of light house..
In the studio on the first week I was stuck for what to start of straight away with . I had been inspired to look at light and darks and shadows as when looking at my work I felt there was a lack of contrast in my paintings. I started off by making up a painting Alla Prima of a
Made up portrait. Which admitidley
Didn’t go down well with my
Tutors as they feel portraiture is the wrong route for me to go down at this stage , as I seem to paint the same painting over and over. Which will lead me to going sideways rather than forwards .
This was a wake up call!
So it was back to the outdoors and to see what I find interesting in the landscape . I did a lot of sketches and some painting sketches. But when speaking to
My tutor we looked at my compositions and saw that some were slightly boring with just using the horizon as the middle of my painting. This made a lot of sense and I’ve started to look at different compositions from different angles something I always struggle with but at this point I need to improve on!
sketch in biro of the castle.
For the first week back I feel I have made a step into the right direction and now it’s time to bring all this together and push forward.
